Enhance Japan-USA cooperation for the people of Micronesia
Prime Minster of Japan HE Shinzo Abe and the President of the United States of America HE Donald Trump
1. We highly appreciate the strong commitments by both Abe administration of Japan and Trump administration of the United States of America on Indo-Pacific region. Especially the return of U.S.A. to the Western Pacific region is important for both countries, let alone for the security of the region.
2. We deeply grieve and would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the American lawyer who was murdered in Yap Island in the Federated States of Micronesia. Both Japan and U.S.A. should seriously consider what she has been suggesting. The welfare, education and law enforcement are quite loose in the Pacific island nations, where China have already been taking advantage of such situation. The Compact of Free Association (COFA) concept from the Cold War era can no longer prevent the uncontrolled situation.
3. Japan is geographically, historically and economically close to the region. It’s high time Japan to secure the peace of Western Pacific region together with U.S.A. who share the same interest. To begin with, the number of Peace Corps and Cooperation Agency needs to be increased several times from the current dispatch. And the ocean surveillance by Japan, U.S.A. and Taiwan cooperated is highly recommended.
4. We strongly suggest Japan to hold the agreement with the region conforming to COFA led by U.S.A., contributing to the region’s security by nourishing education, welfare, infrastructure and personnel exchange. That would eventually strengthen the national security of both nations.
